Banner making workshops, Dubbo
"We've got it down to a fine art.”  (Gwen)

I (Christine) saw about a dozen examples of the most professionally made banners. The process poured out like a recipe.

Ingredients and Method

  • White sheets or hemmed calico up to half the width of the street, depending on the design to be painted.
  • Think about any obstacles along the route of the march such as street dividers that might limit the size of your banners
  • Black cloth decorated with fluro paint, white luminous paint and glitter shows up particularly well in photographs.
  • Need wide open hems at the sides to hold the supporting poles
  • Put art work/designs on overhead foils eg use stickers (‘Read My Lips’), posters
  • Fabric paints, vibrant colours, gold, silver
  • Broom handles, tent poles, dowelling for the sides
  • Hold up fabric on the wall
  • Project the overheads onto the wall until the appropriate size and sketch in outline of design
  • Paint and decorate as appropriate

“Make sure you put holes in the banners or they become really heavy to carry and can take off in the wind!” Gwen, Dubbo

Ideas of banner designs:
Use any artwork, logos that you have used on posters,  flyers,  letterheads, or invite groups or individuals to design their own.
